Ruth Johnson Smiley recently had a successful book launch of her new memoir Becoming Independent at Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, TN. Proceeds from the book sales were donated to Grace Lutheran. The award-winning Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage was co-edited and compiled by Ruth over ten years ago!
In Becoming Independent, Ruth shares her inspiring journey from farm life in East Tennessee to becoming the first woman to earn a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tennessee. Overcoming obstacles on her 16-year path to a bachelor’s degree, she balances personal and academic challenges while seizing opportunities. Her memoir reflects on the pivotal role of family, church, and advocacy for women and girls, showcasing perseverance, resilience, and the power of community.
